1. ABSZOLUTÓRIUM
Az anglisztika alapszakos záróvizsgára csak az a hallgató jelentkezhet, aki az adott félévben határidőre benyújtotta szakdolgozatát, és azt elégtelennél jobb jegyre értékelte a bíráló, továbbá aki a záróvizsgára bocsátásig megszerezte abszolutóriumát avagy végbizonyítványát, tehát legkésőbb a záróvizsga-hetet megelőző héten teljesítette utolsó vizsgáit.
Az abszolutóriumot a Tanulmányi Osztály állítja ki, amelynek jogszabályi kötelessége a végbizonyítvány kiállítása és ezzel a hallgató tanulmányainak lezárása, ha minden feltételnek megfelel. Ha tehát valaki szeretné a tanulmányait további egy vagy két félévvel meghosszabbítani (pl. abból a célból, hogy befejezze minorját vagy valamelyik specializációját, vagy mert Erasmus-ösztöndíjjal külföldre készül), de egyébként már rendelkezik 180 kredittel, akkor fontos, hogy legalább egy kötelezően előírt tárgy teljesítését (pl. Nyelvi kompetenciavizsga) halassza el, mert így nem abszolválhat és a TO sem fogja lezárni a Neptunban tanulmányait.
Az abszolutórium megszerzése után a hallgató több kurzust nem vehet fel a Karon, azaz nem lehet több aktív féléve, viszont a továbbiakban sem tandíjat, sem egyéb költségtérítést nem fizet (leszámítva a hallgatói jogviszonyon kívüli záróvizsgára jelentkezés esetleges díját). Fontos még, hogy a felsőoktatási törvény értelmében az abszolutóriumtól számított öt éven belül záróvizsgát kell tenni, különben az abszolutórium elévül.
2. A ZÁRÓVIZSGA MENETE (2026-OS FRISSÍTÉS)
Az anglisztika alapszakos záróvizsga több részvizsgából áll, melyek a következők:
a. A szakdolgozat megvédése
b. Két szaktárgyi vizsga, mely az alábbi három közül választandó:
Irodalmi záróvizsga (tételsort ld. lent)
Nyelvészeti záróvizsga (tételsort ld. lent)
Történelem és országismeret záróvizsga (tételsort ld. lent)
A 2025-ben tanulmányaikat kezdő anglisztika BA alapszakos hallgatók számára az Angol-Amerikai Intézet felmenő rendszerben módosította a BA záróvizsga szabályait. A módosítás lényege a következő: a jelenleg érvényes záróvizsgarendszer a szakdolgozatvédés mellett két kötelező részvizsga, az angol irodalom és az angol nyelvészet teljesítését írta elő. Az új rendszerben az irodalom és a nyelvészet mellett bevezetünk egy angol-amerikai történelem és országismeret részvizsgát is, és a hallgatók a három részvizsga közül kettőből tehetnek záróvizsgát oly módon, hogy az egyik vizsgát a szakdolgozatuk témaköréhez kapcsolódó szakterületből teszik le, a másikat pedig a maradék kettő közül választhatják.
A 2026 tavaszi záróvizsgán választható jelleggel lehetővé tesszük, hogy akik úgy döntenek, az új záróvizsgarendszer szerint zárják le tanulmányaikat. Mivel az új rendszer könnyítést vezet be a régihez képest (hiszen a régi rendszerben a hallgatók semmilyen választási lehetőséggel nem rendelkeztek), továbbá senki sem szenved hátrányt általa (bárki tehet záróvizsgát az eddigi rendszernek megfelelően irodalomból és nyelvészetből, ha így dönt), az új rendszer idő előtti bevezetése inkább egy új lehetőséget ad a záróvizsgázók kezébe.
Az új záróvizsga lényege: a szakdolgozat védése mellett három lehetséges részvizsga közül (irodalom, nyelvészet, brit és amerikai történelem és országismeret) kettőt kell teljesíteni, amelyek közül az egyiket a szakdolgozat témaköre jelöli ki, a másikat pedig a hallgató szabadon választhatja a maradék két részvizsga közül.
Az összesen három részvizsgára azonos napon, de külön részbizottságok előtt és külön helyszínen kerül sor, hallgatónként eltérő sorrendben, a minél gördülékenyebb lebonyolítás érdekében. A részvizsgák végén nincs eredményhirdetés -- erre csak a teljes vizsga lezajlása után kerül sor, a vizsgaelnök szervezésében.
a.) A szakdolgozat védése során a szakdolgozat bírálója (vagy az ő kényszerű távolléte esetén a témavezető avagy más egyéb kijelölt oktató) tesz fel kérdéseket a vizsgázónak szakdolgozatával kapcsolatban. A bíráló kérheti a téma bővebb kifejtését, egyes hibák szóbeli korrigálását, homályos pontok magyarázatát. A helyszínen felkészülési idő nincs, hiszen a vizsga a szakdolgozati bírálat alapján zajlik, amit a vizsgázó előre megkap. A védésen a vizsgázónak NEM feladata a szakdolgozat tartalmát prezentáció formájában bemutatni, arra technikai lehetőség sincs. A vizsgázó teljesítményét a bíráló/vizsgáztató egy érdemjeggyel értékeli.
b.) Az irodalmi záróvizsga az angol-amerikai irodalomtörténet kötelező kurzusain elsajátított ismereteken alapul. Az irodalmi rész vizsgatételeiről, a vizsga céljáról, a vizsgára készülésről, a vizsga pontos menetéről az alább letölthető dokumentum tájékoztat. A tájékoztatás főbb pontjai magukban foglalják a tételeket, a vizsga időbeosztását, a tételhúzás menetét, a felkészülési időt, a felelet részeit (10 perces beszéd a tételről, 5 perc kérdés-felelet a beszéd főbb pontjairól), az értékelés szempontjait részletesen, valamint az ajánlott irodalomlistát. Az irodalmi záróvizsgát egy jeggyel értékelik a vizsgáztatók.
c.) A nyelvészeti záróvizsgán a hallgatók a kötelező áttekintő nyelvészeti kurzusokon szerzett tudásukról adnak számot úgy, hogy a szak honlapján feltüntetett kérdéssorból véletlenszerűen kiválasztott négy rövid kérdést (a négy nagy témakörből -- Az angol nyelv kiejtése, Az angol nyelv szerkezete, Az angol nyelv története, ill. Angol dialektológia -- egyet-egyet) önállóan kidolgozzák és szóban kifejtik. A nyelvészeti záróvizsgát egy jeggyel értékelik a vizsgáztatók.
d.) Az angol-amerikai történelem és országismeret (British and American Civilization and History or BACH) részvizsga összesen négy kérdéssorból áll: 12-12 témakört alakítottunk ki mind a brit, mind az amerikai országismeret és (kisebb mértékben) történelem vizsgák kötelező anyaga alapján, amelyek egyenként három konkrét kérdést tartalmaznak. Emellett 15-15 ikonikus képet (helyenként képpárt vagy képcsoportot) is összegyűjtöttünk brit és amerikai témakörben, amelyek részben történelmi személyiségekre, eseményekre és jelenségekre utalnak, részben alapvető intézményeket jelölnek vagy egyszerűen széles körben ismert kulturális jelképek. Az új részvizsga lényege tehát: Az angol–amerikai történelem és országismeret (BACH) részvizsga brit és amerikai témakörökből álló tételekre és ikonikus képi forrásokra épül. A hallgató két húzott tételből egyet választ és fejt ki, a másik országhoz kapcsolódóan egy képi forrást értelmez. A történelem-országismeret záróvizsgát egy jeggyel értékelik a vizsgáztatók.
A záróvizsga osztályzatát tehát összesen négy részosztályzat átlaga adja: a szakdolgozaté, a szakdolgozat-védésé, valamint a két szaktárgyi vizsgáé. Amennyiben ezek átlaga X,5-re jönne ki, a TVSz-ben rögzített kerekítési szabály értelmében az összosztályzatot felfelé kerekítjük. Amennyiben bármelyik részjegy elégtelen, a záróvizsga összosztályzata is elégtelen lesz, ám a TVSz (Kari kieg. rend. 18.§ (5)) értelmében a későbbi megismételt záróvizsgán csak az elégtelennel értékelt részvizsgát köteles megismételni a hallgató. A záróvizsga azonos félévben nem ismételhető. A megismételt záróvizsgán a hallgató csak ugyanazt a sikertelen részvizsgát kísérelheti meg újra, amivel korábban próbálkozott, új részvizsga választására további lehetősége nincs.
**** Mi a teendő az új rendszerben? ****
Mivel az új rendszer (a 2025-ben kezdett hallgatókat kivéve) senki számára nem kötelező, de választható, a záróvizsgára jelentkező hallgatók legkésőbb május 1-jén a Neptun-rendszeren keresztül egy Unipoll-kérdőívet fognak kapni, amelyet legkésőbb május 5-ig ki kell tölteniük. Ebben a kérdőívben egyrészt arról kell nyilatkozniuk, hogy
A. a rájuk érvényes rendszerben szeretnének-e záróvizsgát tenni: ez esetben egységesen angol irodalomból és nyelvészetből fognak számot adni tudásukról;
vagy
B. az új rendszer szerinti záróvizsgát választják.
Amennyiben a B opció mellett döntenek, egy újabb kérdésre is választ kell adniuk. A három lehetséges részvizsga, azaz az angol irodalom, az angol nyelvészet és az angol-amerikai történelem és országismeret közül meg kell jelölniük azt, amelyhez a szakdolgozati témájuk kapcsolódik – ez lesz az egyik számukra előírt részvizsga. (Amennyiben bizonytalanok ebben a kérdésben, konzultáljanak erről a témavezetőjükkel.) A maradék két részvizsga közül tetszésük szerint választhatják a nekik szimpatikusabbat. A záróvizsgára az általuk megjelölt részvizsgák alapján fogjuk beosztani a hallgatókat azzal a megkötéssel, hogy az Intézet fenntartja magának a jogot a szakdolgozat témája szerint kötelező részvizsga felülbírálatához, amennyiben azt a hallgató tévesen jelölte meg.
Amennyiben a hallgató a megadott határidőig nem tölti ki a kérdőívet, automatikusan a jelenleg érvényes rendszer, vagyis az A opció szerint fog záróvizsgázni. A határidő lejárta után nincs mód a választás módosítására, tehát bármelyik záróvizsga és bármely részvizsgák mellett kötelezte el magát a hallgató, azokból kell vizsgát tennie.
A legfontosabb teendő: május 1–5. között kitölteni a Neptun Unipoll-kérdőívet, melyben nyilatkoznak arról, hogy a régi vagy az új záróvizsgarendszert választják, és az új esetén, melyik két részvizsgát.

Nyelvvizsgakövetelmény
A diploma megszerzéséhez szükséges nyelvvizsgakövetelményről jogszabály rendelkezik. (Ld. net.jogtar.hu) Anglisztika BA-s hallgatók esetében a diploma megszerzése egyben a felsőfokú nyelvvizsga megszerzését is jelenti, így ezen felül nekik egyéb nyelvvizsgakötelezettségük nincs.
1. Final certificate (“Abszolutórium”)
A student can only apply for the English Studies BA final exam if they have submitted their thesis paper before the deadline, and this was awarded a passgrade (grade above 1); moreover, they have also acquired their final certificate until the beginning of the final exam period. In practice, this means that they have completed all their exams no later than in the week prior to the final exam period.
The final certificate is issued by the Registrar’s Office, which is legally required to issue the certificate and consequently closes the student’s studies when the student has met every requirement. Therefore, if a student wishes to extend their studies with one or two further semesters (e.g. for the purpose of completing a minor programme or a sub-specialisation, or because they intend to spend a semester abroad on an Erasmus grant), but they have already obtained 180 credits, it is important that they postpone the completion of at least one of their compulsory courses (e.g. Language proficiency exam), since in this case, the Registrar’s Office will not close their studies in Neptun, and cannot issue the final certificate either.
After a student has obtained the final certificate, they cannot sign up for any more courses on the Faculty, that is, they cannot register for an active semester. They no longer pay tuition or other fees (except for the fee of registration for a final exam following the termination of the student legal status). It is also important to know that according to the Hungarian Act on National Higher Education, the final examination must be completed within five years of the issuing of the final certificate, otherwise the certificate expires.
2. The final examination process (2026 update)
The final examination for the BA program in English Studies consists of the following components:
- Defense of the BA thesis
- Exams in two subjects to be chosen from the following three options:
Final examination in Literature (see the list of topics below)
Final examination in Linguistics (see the list of topics below)
Final examination in History and Civilization (see the list of topics below)
For students who began their BA studies in English Studies in 2025, the Institute of English and American Studies has modified the BA final examination regulations on a phased-in basis. The essence of the modification is as follows: under the currently valid final examination system, in addition to defending the BA thesis, students were required to complete two compulsory exams: one in English literature and one in English linguistics. Under the new system, a new exam in British and American civilization and history (BACH) is also introduced alongside literature and linguistics, and students are required to take final examinations in two of the three exam options. One of these must correspond to the disciplinary field related to the topic of their BA thesis, while the other can be chosen from the remaining two options.
In the spring of 2026, students will have the option to complete their studies under the new final examination system. Because the new system introduces a choice that did not exist previously – and because no student is disadvantaged by its early implementation, as all candidates may still take the literature and linguistics examinations according to the former system – the early introduction effectively expands, rather than restricts, the available examination pathways. In this sense, the new system simply provides an additional option for candidates preparing for the final examination.
The core principle of the new final examination system is the following: in addition to the defense of the BA thesis, students must complete two exams selected from three areas (literature, linguistics, and British and American civilization and history). One of these is determined by the subject area of the BA thesis, while the other can be freely chosen by the student from the remaining two options.
All three components of the final exam take place on the same day, but they are conducted before separate subcommittees and at different locations, and in an order that may differ from student to student, in order to ensure the smoothest possible organization. Results are announced only after the completion of the entire examination process, organized by the chair of the examination committee.
a) During the defense of the BA thesis, the reviewer of the thesis (or, in the event of their unavoidable absence, the supervisor or another designated instructor) asks questions related to the thesis. The reviewer may request a more detailed elaboration of the topic, oral correction of certain errors, or clarification of unclear points. There is no on-site preparation time, as the examination is based on the written thesis review, which the candidate receives in advance. During the defense, the candidate is NOT required to present the content of the thesis in the form of a presentation, and there is no technical possibility to do so. The candidate’s performance is evaluated by the reviewer/examiner with a single grade.
b) The final exam in Literature is based on the knowledge acquired in the compulsory courses on British and American literary history. A downloadable document (see below) provides information on the exam topics, the purpose of the examination, preparation guidelines, and the exact procedure of the examination. The main points covered in this information include the list of topics, the time frame of the exam, the procedure for drawing topics, preparation time, the structure of the oral response (a 10-minute presentation on the topic, followed by 5 minutes of questions and answers on the main points), detailed evaluation criteria, and the recommended reading list. The literature final exam is evaluated with a single grade by the examiners.
c) At the final exam in Linguistics, students demonstrate the knowledge acquired in the compulsory overview courses in linguistics by independently preparing and orally presenting answers to four short questions randomly selected from the question pool published on the program’s website. One question is selected from each of the four main topic areas – The Pronunciation of English, The Structure of English, The History of English, and English Dialectology. The linguistics final exam is evaluated with a single grade by the examiners.
d) The final exam in British and American Civilization and History (BACH) consists of four sets of questions. Based on the compulsory material of the British and American civilization and (to a lesser extent) history lecture courses, twelve topics were created for both the British and American sections, each containing three specific questions. In addition, fifteen iconic images (in some cases image pairs or groups) were compiled for both British and American topics. These images partly refer to historical figures, events, and phenomena, and partly represent fundamental institutions or widely known cultural symbols. The essence of the new exam is therefore as follows: the British and American Civilization and History (BACH) examination is based on topic-based questions and iconic visual sources from both British and American subject areas. The student selects and elaborates on one of two drawn topics and, in relation to the other country, interprets a visual source. The history and civilization final exam is evaluated with a single grade by the examiners.
The final examination grade is calculated as the average of four component grades: the grade awarded for the BA thesis, the grade for the thesis defense, and the grades for the two final exams. If the average results in a value of X.5, the overall grade is rounded up in accordance with the rounding rules set out in the Study and Examination Regulations. If any of the partial grades is a fail, the overall final examination grade will also be a fail; however, pursuant to the Study and Examination Regulations (Faculty Supplementary Regulation §18 (5)), in the case of a repeated final examination, the student is required to retake only the exam that was previously graded as insufficient. The final examination may not be repeated in the same semester. In a repeated final examination, the student may attempt only the same failed component examination as before; there is no further opportunity to choose a different component examination.
**** What needs to be done under the new system? ****
Since the new system (with the exception of students who began their studies in 2025) is not mandatory for anyone but is optional, students registering for the final examination will receive a Unipoll questionnaire via the Neptun system by May 1 at the latest, which must be completed by May 5. In this questionnaire, students must declare whether:
A. they wish to take the final examination according to the system applicable to them – in which case they will uniformly be examined in English literature and linguistics;
or
B. they choose the final examination under the new system.
If they choose option B, they must answer an additional question. From the three possible final exam options – English literature, English linguistics, and British and American civilization and history – they must indicate the one that is related to the topic of their BA thesis; this will be the first partial exam prescribed for them. (If they are uncertain about the subject area of their thesis, they should consult their thesis supervisor.) From the remaining two exam options, they can freely choose the one they prefer. Students will be assigned to the final examination based on their exam combinations they have indicated, with the proviso that the Institute reserves the right to review and override the mandatory exam option determined by the thesis topic if it has been incorrectly indicated by the student.
If the student does not complete the questionnaire by the specified deadline, they will automatically take the final examination under the currently valid system, i.e., option A. After the deadline, there is no possibility to modify the choice; therefore, whichever final examination system and exam options the student has committed to, they must take them.
